COCHLEAR IMPLANT SURGERY
The KKR ENT Hospital runs the largest cochlear implant program in India. An average of 250 implantations is done every year. More than 2000 implants have been performed at the KKR ENT Hospital & Research Institute. The cochlear implant is a safe, medical device that replicates the function of the cochlea when it is damaged. In essence what it does is pick up sound with the aid of the microphones in the processor, which then sends it to the implant, which stimulates the auditory nerve directly sending signals to the brain.
The team at the KKR Cochlear Implant Centre is a multi-disciplinary team comprised of surgeons, audiologists, speech pathologists, a social worker, a developmental pediatrician and a psychologist. The surgical team is headed by doctor Ravi Ramalingam and the rehabilitation unit is located at KKR superspecialty hospital at Maduravoyal. We are dedicated to helping deaf children hear, particularly children with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss. Once they have the gift of clear sound, these children can develop the ability to listen, to understand and to speak.
